Jules LEFEBVRE (1836-1912). Portrait of Lady Godiva, prepara - Lot 92
Jules LEFEBVRE (1836-1912). Portrait of Lady Godiva, preparatory study. Sanguine. 41 x 30 cm. Louis XVI period giltwood frame. This sanguine is a preparatory study for an oil painting featuring Lady Godiva auctioned at Christies in London on 27/10/2014 under no. 47. The model is probably the artist's niece, Marthe Durand-Buquet. This painting is one of Lefèbvre's many representations of the character of Lady Godiva, taken from an English medieval legend. An early version of this legend was written by Roger de Wendover, a monk of Saint Alban, in his Flores Historianum in 1236: in 1057, Lady Godiva was the wife of the powerful Leofric Count of Murcia, who was burdening the inhabitants of Coventry with the tonlieu, a kind of trade tax. Lady Godiva couldn't stand it any longer, and begged her husband to reduce the tax. He agreed if, in exchange, she rode through the village completely naked, which the heroine did. This moment is depicted in the Musée de Picardie's gigantic history painting Lady Godiva, measuring 620 x 390 cm.
