Maison SORMANI in Paris. Napoleon III-period box in burr ced - Lot 653
Maison SORMANI in Paris. Napoleon III-period box in burr cedar veneer, brass inlays and blackened wood, decorated with arabesques, the lid embellished with the coat of arms of the family of the boyar princes Roznovanu of Lasi (capital of Romanian Moldavia, the country's second largest city after Bucharest) with closed crown and the motto "sereno aut nubiloso spes". It opens with a flap revealing two side-opening compartments, an English-style drawer at the bottom and a pusher controlling a secret drawer on the right. Inside, engraved signature "Paul Sormani 10 rue Charlot Paris". 19 x 35 x 26 cm. The box was probably commissioned by Prince Nicolae Rosetti-Roznovanu (1842-1891), who opposed the union of Moldavia and Wallachia in the 1850s. He studied law in Paris. After returning to Romania, he became a lawyer, judge and politician. A supporter of an independent Moldavia, he fomented a separatist coup d'état against the new principality of Wallachia-Moldavia, which failed. After being pardoned by King Carol I, he went on to illustrate himself in the Romanian War of Independence, which brought the principality out of the Ottoman fold thanks to Russian intervention. Or perhaps it was Gheorghe Roznovanu (1832-1904), who made a career in the Russian army, then in the Moldavian army, before turning to politics: he was elected senator, then deputy and president of the Romanian National Assembly.
