Germain RAINGO-PELOUSE (1893-1963). River bank. Oil on canvas signed. 46 x 33 cm. Biography: The artist's paternal grandfather, Ernest Raingo, being the elder brother of Alice Hoschedé (née Raingo), our artist is, through Alice's remarriage in 1892 to Claude Monet, the impressionist master's grand-nephew. This family connection meant that Germain Raingo-Pelouse would always remain attached to Vernonnet, whose landscapes were to form an important part of his work. Ernest Raingo (1841-1871) was the grandson of Zacharie Raingo (1775-1847)[2], one of the four watchmaking brothers who founded the Raingo Frères company in 1813, extending their activity to art foundry in 1841, later becoming major suppliers to Emperor Napoleon III, and publishers of bronzes by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, James Pradier and Auguste Moreau. Ernest and his wife, née Lucy-Alexandrine Fossey (1842-1895), had a son named Jean. After Ernest's death, his widow remarried Léon Germain Pelouse (1838-1891), by then a well-known painter, and Jean added his adoptive father's surname to his own, giving his three sons, Germain, Bernard and Pierre, the name Raingo-Pelouse. Germain Raingo-Pelouse studied with Fernand Cormon and Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1910 to 1913. He painted landscapes, portraits, nudes, still lifes and genre scenes. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1912, then at the Galerie Visconti in Paris from 1921 to 1924. He took part in the First World War as a pilot with the rank of adjutant. He flew Farman F.40s around Salonika (Greece), carrying out observation missions to protect the port. His Panomi squadron is based at Aponomi. He spent several periods in Brittany and in 1920 in Corsica. His studio was sold successively at the Hôtel Rameau in Versailles by the Blache auction house on February 24, 1974, then at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris by the Pescheteau auction house on April 28, 1981. A series of dated and located paintings show that Germain Raingo-Pelouse also visited Bulgaria, particularly the Karlovo region, around 1936.
