PAIR OF GOBELET TIMBALES in silver and vermeil, single-flat - Lot 9
PAIR OF GOBELET TIMBALES in silver and vermeil, single-flat model, bearing the arms of Maréchal d'Empire Auguste Frédéric Viesse de MARMONT (1774-1852), Duc de Raguse, and his wife Anne Marie Hortense PERREGAUX (1779-1857). Goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Caude ODIOT, goldsmith in Paris from 1785. This mark was inscribed during the period 1797-1809. Marked 1st Coq de Paris (1797-1809), large guarantee on the Vieillard head. Height: 6.3 cm. Weight: 174.29 g. Probably made on the occasion of his appointment as Marshal of France in 1809, these kettledrums were undoubtedly part of the kit of his wife, the Duchess of Raguse. They were probably re-engraved between 1815 (Duke of Raguse's election to the peerage) and 1817 (the couple's divorce). Hortense Perregaux, daughter of a wealthy banker, was renowned at the beginning of the Restoration for her grand receptions and quality dinners, which were said to be the best supplied with "cellar material" and "elegant ladies" (see mémoires d'un bourgeois de Paris by L.Véron, 1856). Expert: Emmanuel de MONTEYNARD
