Edouard MACAVOY (1905-1991). Preparatory study for the portr - Lot 321
Edouard MACAVOY (1905-1991). Preparatory study for the portrait of André Gide, Juan-les-Pins, 1949. Charcoal drawing signed lower left. 45 x 30. The final portrait is in the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. Created in Juan-les-Pins, in a villa rented by Gide for the summer, and carefully supervised by him, it gave rise to numerous preparatory studies and four other versions in oil that did not satisfy him. "It was with the portrait of William Somerset Maugham that I realized that the portrait is a sum, and that it can hardly exist before the age of 70, that is, before all the signs are inscribed on the face. It was with Gide that I became aware of this network-geography of wrinkles, tears, ecstasy, despair-that we must learn to read and decant, as we do at school, rivers and lakes. "Georges-Edouard Mac-avoy. Provenance: artist's family
