Emile GUILLIER (1849-1883). Spectators. Charcoal and India i - Lot 404
Emile GUILLIER (1849-1883). Spectators. Charcoal and India ink, annotated upper left "... Les joueurs de ballet???". Unsigned. Cartouche "Emile Guillier" in the frame. 28.5 x 23 cm. Provenance: Léon Suzzarelli, then Raoul Jansen. Biography: A student of Isidore Pils, Adolphe Yvon and Carolus-Duran, he exhibited at the Salon from 1870. He was a member of the Groupe des Batignolles. During the Paris Commune, he fought at Châtillon in a mobile battalion of the Seine. After the war, he threw himself headlong into street painting. Between the markets and the banks of the Seine, between beggars and workers, he captured his everyday Paris on canvas, in the manner of an avant-garde impressionist. Works by the artist are held at the Musée Carnavalet.
