In this gouache composition, the painter depicts two teenage girls, probably from Bou-
Saãda, perched on a tree and playing. One is wearing a multicolored dress, the other a patterned white dress;
their veils are made of white muslin. They wear wrist bracelets and are barefoot.
The girl on the left is hanging from a lower branch than the one on the right. The tree trunk forms a curve
curve and counter-curve that the two teenage girls embrace with their bodies. The
chromaticism is composed of blue, green, pink, red, white, gray, black, orange, ochre and violet.
There's a preoccupation with truth in this work: "a vigor of presence and a sharpness of form".
Our gouache is a preparatory work for the oil-on-canvas Adolescentes dans un arbre (Adolescents in a Tree) presented for sale
at Sotheby's in Paris on November 18, 2013, lot 179. The latter was kept by Jeanne Dinet-Rollince,
sister of the artist, and is reproduced in her book "La vie de E. Dinet" published by Editions Maisonneuve in 1938.
In addition, a small-format tempera on cardboard (26 x 17 cm) was sold at Ader-Tajan on June 18, 1993, lot 237.
This work appears at no. 209 in the artist's catalog raisonné by Denise Brahimi & Koudir Benchikou, published in 1991 by ACR Edition.
It was used to illustrate the book "Le désert" by Sliman ben Ibrahim and Etienne Dinet, published by Editions Henri Piazza in
Henri Piazza in 1911, p. 117.
This work was exhibited at the 1931 retrospective devoted to Dinet at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale, no. 53.
