Jean-Christophe AVERTY (1928-2017). Face on a red background. Gouache and watercolor signed lower left. 46 x 37 cm. Biography: Jean-Christophe Averty, born August 6, 1928 in Paris and died March 4, 2017 in Beaumont-sur-Oise, was a French radio and television host and director. From the 1960s onwards, he revolutionized the French small screen by directing the greatest variety singers, from the oldest to the youngest stars of the yéyé generation, such as Claude François, Johnny Hallyday, Françoise Hardy, Eddy Mitchell, Gilbert Bécaud, Sylvie Vartan, Serge Gainsbourg, Dalida and Yves Montand. Many of his television productions made him a precursor of video art in France. In the decades that followed, his work was taken up by research groups at the Institut national de l'audiovisuel (INA). He was one of the last salaried directors of the Société française de production (SFP) and, for a long time, the only ORTF director to see his programs sold abroad. A great connoisseur of jazz, Averty spent many years filming the Jazz à Juan festival, where all the greatest musicians of the genre performed. He was also one of the voices of France Inter and France Culture, notably with the radio program Les Cinglés du music-hall.
