During the last twenty years, numerous exhibitions have given honor to the work of Jean-Francis Auburtin. In 2019 in particular, the beautiful exhibition of the Musée des Impressionnismes de Giverny entitled Monet-Auburtin an artistic encounter, shows us the dialogue between the two artists. The museum now holds two beautiful paintings by Auburtin: Fishing Park at Pourville and Yellow Rays at the Cliffs of Mordal. If Auburtin follows in the footsteps of his elder, there is no imitation of the former by the latter. Motifs and framings are often identical, but the support, the medium and the manner are different. The large rough mill rag paper with thick grains favors the matte aspect of the gouache that he likes, with a few rare small touches of pastel. However, in Normandy in the years 1897-1898, he produced a series of watercolors in Japanese ink, annotated day by day like a small journal. Auburtin planted his easel in front of the most beautiful motifs of the Normandy coast: Etretat, Pourville, Dieppe and of course Varengeville where he lived for more than 10 years in his house "la Mazurie" built by his architect brother Jean-Marcel, author of numerous seaside villas in Houlgate and also of the famous Ephrussi de Rothschild villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The "Symbolist of the Sea" tirelessly walked the customs paths of all our French coasts, taking refuge in particular in the customs hut in Varengeville located near the Gorge du petit Ailly. This same Varengeville where Monet returned in 1897-1898 to be inspired by the same marine horizons... Auburtin excels in capturing the variations of light with stormy skies or morning mists in celadon tones, and blazing sunsets, views often taken from the small marine cemetery of the church of Varengeville located in front of the cliffs of Dieppe, as in the present painting.
