SAINT VERNIER of Oberwesel or Bacharach called Verny in wood carved in the round, gilded and polychromed. Standing and wearing a hat, he has lost the attributes he was supposed to hold in his hands, a pruning hook in his right hand and a bunch of grapes in the other; at his feet, a vine, a barrel of wine called a bousset and a dog lying down; inscription ST. VERNY on the terrace. Eastern France, 18th century Height : 37 cm (Misses, slight accidents, gilding refreshed). Expert: Mrs Laurence FLIGNY A Rhenish saint from the end of the 13th century, Vernier is one of those martyred children who were supposed to have been immolated by the Jews. This son of a winegrower is thus reputed to have been savagely massacred in Oberwesel, not far from Coblence, after having taken communion. His cult in France was first spread in the eastern provinces and later in Burgundy and Franche-Comté.
