Chadwick was born in Boston in the United States and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. He became friends with John Singer Sargent. He married the Swedish painter Emma Löwstädt-Chadwick (1855-1932) and settled in Grez-sur-Loing (Seine-et-Marne) where he lived until the end of his life, which did not prevent him from travelling with his wife to Brittany, England and in particular to Cornwall, Spain, North Africa, Italy and the United States.
