Edouard MACAVOY (1905-1991). Preparatory study for the portrait of André Gide, Juan-les-Pins, 1949. Charcoal drawing signed lower left. 45 x 30. The definitive portrait is kept in the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. Done in Juan-les-Pins in a villa that Gide had rented for the summer and watched over by him with great care, it gave rise to numerous preparatory studies and four other versions in oil that did not satisfy him. "It was with the portrait of William Somerset Maugham that I became aware that the portrait is a sum, and that it can hardly exist before the age of 70, that is, before all the signs are written on the face. It is with Gide that I became aware of this network-geography of wrinkles, tears, ecstasy, despair-which one must learn to read and to decant, like at school, the rivers and lakes. "Georges-Edouard Mac-avoy. Provenance: family of the artist
