Charles-Emile CALLANDE DE CHAMPMARTIN (1797-1883) Presumed portrait of Esprit Requien (1788-1851) Oil on canvas (original) signed at the top right H. 55 cm / W. 46 cm This portrait can be compared to the portrait of Callande de Champmartin kept at the Calvet Museum in Avignon since 1846. Requien was one of the most famous naturalists of the 19th century and the most famous Avignon scholar. As John Paul Lambertson wrote in his doctoral thesis The genesis of French Romanticism: P.-N.
